A glazier who threatened to damage a customer’s property when he wasn’t paid, fraudulently used the logo of a trusted trader scheme and carried out substandard work has been given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to complete community service following a prosecution by the Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service (HotSWTS).
Reece Adam Moate (36) of Barrack Street, Plymouth, ran the day-to-day operations of Go Eco Glazing Ltd despite not being listed as a director of the company. He came to the attention of HotSWTS in the summer of 2021 when customers came forward with complaints about long delays, poor workmanship, the use of incorrect materials and aggressive behaviour.
This case sends a clear message: if you try to rip people off, you will be held accountable
Moate also fraudulently used the ‘Secured by Design’ logo to mislead customers into thinking their homes were fitted with windows and doors that met police-approved security standards.
Moate appeared at Plymouth Crown Court on 25 July where he pleaded guilty to multiple offences including fraud, misleading customers and threatening to commit criminal damage.
Passing sentence, Judge Linford described Moate’s conduct as “well below what is expected of a professional tradesperson,” noting the financial and emotional distress caused to his victims.
Moate was given a 12-month suspended prison sentence and ordered to carry out 140 months of unpaid work. He was also banned from acting as a company director for five years. Go Eco Glazing Ltd, which is now in liquidation, received a 12-month conditional discharge.
HotSWTS head Fakir Mohamed Osman commented on conclusion of the case: “Moate tried to profit from poor-quality work and intimidation. This case sends a clear message: if you try to rip people off, you will be held accountable. We urge residents to use trusted sources such as the Trading Standards ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme when choosing a trader.”
